Outside Mount vs. Inside Mount Blinds

One of the first things you’re faced with when measuring for your window treatments is deciding between doing an inside mount or an outside mount. But don’t worry—the decision is easy if you understand the simple differences between each type of mount.

Inside Mount

When you mount your shades inside the window frame, you’re doing an inside mount. That window frame might be surrounded by wood or drywall. It might be a few inches deep or several inches or more. An inside mount generally looks clean and modern, which is why an inside mount is preferred by many designers.

One of the disadvantages of an inside mounted window treatment is that it tends to allow more light in along the sides than an outside mounted window treatment. It’s not a huge difference, but for some people this is an important factor. Also, an inside mount doesn’t work well for windows where the horizontal width varies too much from top to bottom—such as older homes that might not have very straight lines.

Outside Mount

An outside mounted window treatment covers part of the window trim or all the trim. It works on almost any window. One big advantage of an outside mounted window treatment is that it can cover up any imperfections or off-kilter angles in the window trim. Outside mounting also provides greater light control by reducing the light that seeps in along the edges of any shade or set of blinds. By extending the size of the window treatment beyond the width of the window you can give the impression of a larger window—something that can make a room feel roomier.

Which should you choose?

Most designers choose inside mount if that’s possible. But if your windows do not have a deep enough frame or if the frame is crooked or uneven, the outside mount works beautifully.

And, if you’re trying to create the impression of a larger window, the outside mount is the way to go. You can expand the width of the window treatment or even mount the window treatment higher to make your ceiling look taller.

Whichever mounting style you choose, it’s important to measure properly.
